Nigeria is the market where buyers most often think they have the paperwork and do not. SONCAP asks for two separate documents, and only one of them lasts.
What Nigeria asks for
Nigeria runs SONCAP under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. A product first earns a Product Certificate, which covers the product itself for a period. Each individual shipment then needs its own SONCAP Certificate, issued before loading. Having the first without the second still stops the container.
| What the scheme is called | SONCAP |
|---|---|
| Who runs it | Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) |
| What you receive | A Product Certificate, then a SONCAP Certificate per shipment |
| When it is issued | Before the goods are loaded, in India |
| Main ports | Apapa and Tin Can, Lagos; Onne |
The Product Certificate proves the product. The SONCAP Certificate clears the shipment. You need both.
Once a product is certified, repeat orders are faster. The first order carries the time cost.
The SONCAP Certificate is issued against the importer and the shipment. Late changes mean reissue.
